in the footsteps of Odysseus 2010
Ionian Inspires the Return to where it all began
(in the footsteps of Odysseus)
London, 10/11/2010
Last year Ionian Inspired Cricket, this year Ionian Inspires the Return…to where it all began. Many goals achieved already and the International Cricket Festival took its place amongst the best sports event in the Ionian Islands. On Wednesday the 10th November 2010 exceptional guests arrived from all over the world to support the big idea.
It was announced the open invitation to young people to visit Greece, to follow the footsteps of Odysseus and take a life journey…to where it all began. We are inviting school groups around the globe to be introduced to the Greek way of living, the Mediterranean diet, Greek Easter, the natural beauty of the Ionian, the Cultural wealth of Corfu and at the same time to play cricket. We want to be inspired by them to show us their way of living, their sports and games, their cultural identities in celebration of Cultural Diversity and Humanity.
To support this initiative we were delighted to have with us Giorgos Nikitiadis, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, the hosts of the evening Kostas Georgalidis, General Secretary of the Ionian Islands Region and Iosif Nikitas, President of the Hellenic Cricket Federation, Maya Tscoklis, MP of the Greek Parliament and Sophia Panayiotaki, Director of the GNTO London Office.
It was a privilege to have as guests and speakers Bettany Hughes, historian, broadcaster and author passionate about Hellas, Nic Pothas, Hampshire CCC Captain and Nick Hatzoglou, Chair of the Australian Hellenic Federation and Coordinatior of the AFL Multicultural Department, Melis Chatzychrisidis, Arts Council Senior Officer for Engagement and Participation, Count Spryros Flambouriaris, Sir Orr-Erwin and many others Greece and Cricket lovers.
Several journalists commissioned by major British media such as BBC and London Evening Standard covered the event.
The Ionian Inspires Cricket received funding from the Region of the Ionian Islands, was organised by the Hellenic Cricket Federation and supported by the Greek National Tourism Organisation.
"… It was a very good evening and it all went very well. I learnt so much about cricket in Greece, and particularly in Corfu… and I shall certainly try to get to Corfu on my cricket trips…"
Chris Florence, BBC World Service Radio Sport."This was such a perfect venue it did not take long before my limited knowledge of cricket and Corfu was broadened. A real bonus was the presence of Bettany Hughes, such an excellent ambassador."
Richard Gardner, Rex features"…hope all goes well with future Greek cricket projects. Will be watching with keen interest at this end."
